Kindergarten profile:
Hunterville Mobile Kindergarten provides a unique early childhood education service to rural areas of Manawatu and Rangitikei. Based in Hunterville, a van full of teaching resources is driven weekly to eight different venues by the sole-charge head teacher.
Sessions are held in schools or community halls where the larger items of equipment are kept, while other equipment is brought in the van and set up for each session. Parents play an important role in helping the teacher set up the equipment and run the sessions and, unlike many other kindergartens, younger siblings are always welcome. The parental involvement and diverse age range creates a rich learning environment and the sessions become an important meeting place for families in isolated rural areas. Children aged two and a half and over can be left at sessions, but parents or caregivers are required to supervise younger children.
