Milverton Kindergarten Philosophy
We believe that through exploration of the learning environment and links with families, all children are empowered to become competent and confident life-long learners. * Exploration: working through a process, perseverance, problem solving, creativity, making choices, leadership, initiative, following instructions, social skills. * Learning Environment: exploring through using senses, physical abilities/skills, literacy, numeracy, science, art, music, drama, language/communications, routines, peer tutoring. * Links with Family: being part of children's learning, involvement in kindergarten community, reciprocal & responsive communication. * Inclusion: welcoming environment, respecting diversity, kindness, playing as good friends, bicultural & multiculturalism. *Empowerment: confidence, self-esteem, sense of belonging, well being, sense of pride, contribution, fun, independence, patience, cooperation.

We respect and value cultural difference and acknowledge the Treaty of Waitangi.
We provide a welcoming, positive environment and encourage parent involvement.
Each child is respected as an individual and supported to learn at their own individual rate.
We foster children’s curiosity, creativity, problem solving and sense of fun through the provision of hands on learning experiences.
We encourage children to explore their own ideas and thinking.
We provide resources and support to enable children to further explore their interests and gain deeper understanding
We encourage children’s independence, and also nurture their self-esteem.
We give children strategies to enable them to respect and care for each other and the kindergarten environment.
Children’s assessment is documented and is available for parents to view.
We foster and encourage partnership and communication between parents/whanau, home and kindergarten
Through ongoing professional development teachers ensure they keep up to date with current educational research and Milverton Kindergarten celebrates it’s rich cultural diversity. Many of our international families are involved with Massey University.

Our programme is based on the principles, goals and strands of the National Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whaariki.
Each child has their own portfolio which includes photographs, learning stories, various observations, record of excursions and
visitors to kindergarten. These portfolios are on display at kindergarten for parents and children to view at any time. Portfolios are presented to children when they leave kindergarten.

In the morning sessions we break into three groups twice a week. Once a week we work in our books for example, recording via a drawing or a story (child’s voice) a visitor to kindergarten or graphing eye colour etc. The other group times may include drama, pre-maths activities, stories and comprehension. Music, art, drama and creativity feature strongly in our programme.

Families are encouraged to participate in kindergarten sessions, fundraising and fun events.
Some of our recent family events include:
• Multicultural lunch
• Fish and chip evening
• Bike-a-thon
• Grandparents, relatives and special people day
• Sausage sizzles
• Disco
• Special theme day eg. dress up day

Families on our waiting list can attend our playgroup held on Wednesday afternoons. This is a great way for your children to
become familiar with the kindergarten environment and meet other children and families.

You are welcome to come and visit at any time, we would love to see you.
