Follett Street celebrates harvest season
March 2011

It's harvest month in Marton and Follett Street Kindergarten celebrated the season with their very own colourful scarecrow.

March is a month of fairs, farmers' markets and fetes as well as a pumpkin growing competition and district-wide scarecrow competition.

It's a time when scarecrows of all shapes and sizes appear in shop windows, businesses, schools and private homes. Adding colour to harvest festivities.

Children at Follett Street lovingly splashed their scarecrow with paint before placing 'Mr Bright-colour-man' at the kindergarten gate. Although he didn't win the big prize, teachers say it was still a whole lot of fun.

"Mr Bright-colour-man has made us think more about the significance of harvest time for our families and we're considering getting more involved in the festival activities next March. We might even grow a pumpkin", Annie from Follett Street said.

Join Peter Wedde at Follett Street's Acquisitions antique roadshow
October 2010

Dust off your antiques for Follett Street Kindergarten's  "Acquisitions" Antiques Roadshow and Garden Fair to be held Sunday November 7th at Te Pohui in Powera Road, Marton.

Tickets are $20 each and available from Follett Street Kindergarten, Petals and Presents (Marton and Bulls), McVerry Crawford Mitsubishi (Marton, Palmerston North, Wanganui and Feilding) and Poppies Bookshop (Wanganui and Feilding).

High Tea is included in the $20 ticket price and antiques expert Peter Wedde, from TVNZ's Auction House, will be on hand to value antiques for $10 per item.

Other attractions include over 25 boutique stalls, a vintage car display and live music. Lunches and wine will be available for sale and it will be a fabulous opportunity to engage in a bit of Christmas shopping.

All proceeds from the day will go towards Follett Street Kindergarten's playground, which has been rebuilt after a safety audit recommended an upgrade of the thirty-year-old equipment earlier this year.

Fun and games at Follett Street
September 2010

Follett Street Kindergarten in Marton has a fantastic new playground to challenge and extend children as they play and explore.

Following a playground audit, the decision was made to replace the old static structure with more modern equipment to ensure children's safety.

The kindergarten committee put their fundraising hats on and, as a result, they now have a fabulous new playground combining static and moveable equipment funded entirely by their efforts and community support.

Follett Street Kindergarten's teaching team said, "our children enjoy the opportunity to role play and we believe any outdoor equipment installed at Follett Street needs to cater for all types of play".

The new playground certainly achieves this mission with monkey bars, a climbing wall, a fireman's pole and a spider net.

The new space also allows for extended role play and the double wobbly slide is proving a huge hit with children.

To celebrate their new playground, Follett Street held a Special Friends Day on August 27th and were delighted to see so many friends and family members come along to share in the occasion.

To help fund their new playground, the kindergarten is also planning for an Acquisitions Antique and Garden Fair fundraiser to be held Sunday November 7th.

The fair will be a community event with an Antiques Valuer present to assess any articles brought along by members of the public. Other highlights will include a huge variety of art and craft stalls and the serving of ‘High Tea'.

Tickets for this event go on sale October 1st. For more information please contact Pip on 06 327 7363 or Amy on 06 327 5547.

In the line of duty
April 2010

Children at Follett Street Kindergarten received a special visit from a four-legged police officer earlier this term. Sergeant Lance from Palmerston North and his police dog, Nika, travelled to Follett Street to help children understand the role of police in our community.

Police have been in the spotlight at Follett Street with plenty of play and learning based on police activities and safety. A small group of boys took up investigative roles; hunting for lost keys and cordoning off the crime scene. Other children enjoyed dressing up as police officers and all children learnt about road safety when Euan's dad played police officer and showed them how to cross at a pedestrian crossing.

Nika's visit was a highlight of the children's learning. Sergeant Lance shared photos of police dogs at work and Nika demonstrated how well he could locate and retrieve a toy frog. After retrieving the frog, Nika sniffed the children's hands and enjoyed friendly pats before returning to his dog box in Sergeant Lance's brand new police van.

Sergeant Lance showed off his new van by flashing the lights and blasting the siren. What a wonderful learning experience and exciting day at kindergarten.
