Feilding Kindergarten gets growing

Children at Feilding Kindergarten are showing a budding interest in gardening following the development of a kindergarten worm farm and edible garden.
A grant from Fonterra allowed the kindergarten to purchase equipment, and liquid fertiliser from the worm farm is already being used in the garden.
Teacher Maree Riordan thoroughly enjoyed setting up planter boxes with children at the kindergarten.
"So far we've planted cranberries, blueberries, red guava and pepino el caminos", she said.
"We're now looking forward to picking the fruit from our plants and using them in cooking."
Planter boxes have been placed around the kindergarten's carpentry area and children are doing a fantastic job of ensuring the plants get watered.
"They're learning a lot of new skills in caring for the environment both here and at home", Maree said.
Teachers say the next step will be raised beds to extend the vegetable garden for a wider variety of healthy, edible treats.

Wild times at Feilding Kindergarten
August 2010
A visit from Farmer Bee and her Zippity Zoo saw Feilding Kindergarten transform into a fun-filled farmyard on Friday 20th August.
The Zippity Zoo mobile petting zoo consists of rabbits, goats, guinea pigs, chickens, lambs, a rooster and a dog called Honey.
Zookeeper, Farmer Bee, travels throughout the Wellington and Manawatu regions providing a unique, educational experience in which children can touch, hold and feed the friendly farmyard animals.
Children at Feilding Kindergarten thoroughly enjoyed the Zippity Zoo visit as they learnt how to hold and look after each of Farmer Bee's special animals.
Teachers described the visit as "a fantastic opportunity for children to get up close and personal with animals that they possibly wouldn't otherwise get to touch, hold or feed"
Children and teachers all had an incredible time and are looking forward to seeing Farmer Bee again when she visits in 2011.
Feilding Kindergarten - a hive of kitchen activity
August 2010
Sporting sparkling new facilities Feilding Kindergarten's head teacher Sue Williamson and staff are enthusiastic about their new paint and paper kitchen.
Mrs Williamson said everything was tidy and compact in the new area. "The old area was drab, dark and dingy, and it was unorganised as not enough space was available."
Teacher aide Tracy White is delighted with her new domain.
Next to the paint and paper kitchen is a new paraplegic toilet and hand-washing area for staff and adults, a much nicer space than the previous cramped arrangements.
The new office, although still under construction, is spacious and existing veranda is to be lifted. The veranda will be closed in; this new area will be a family corner.
