Kindergarten profile: Roslyn Kindergarten is situated in the eastern part of Palmerston North with a population that is diverse in race, age, culture, economic strata and family composition. A range of early childhood services serves the community and this kindergarten feeds into five local schools. Our kindergarten's philosophy is to meet the special needs of all our children by providing an equitable, safe and stimulating environment. In consultation with parents / whanau, we strive to develop self-esteem, independence and caring attitudes. By recognising the individual needs and abilities of each child, we organise the integrated curriculum to promote happy development of the whole child. We facilitate and endorse all cultures in our New Zealand heritage based on the partnership between Maori and Pakeha as established by the Treaty of Waitangi. Our programme is based on the National Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whaariki. We provide a stimulating environment and encourage the children to wonder, experiment and develop skills to represent these experiences. We place emphasis on the social aspect of children's learning. The children are encouraged to be independent, engage in decision-making and co-operate with others. We plan for both individual children and the whole group, welcome parent input and have an open door policy. One of the special and unique features of this kindergarten is our large group times for both sessions where everyone is involved. The family and community believe that whanau / family time is when we all come together as one. The morning mat time begins each morning with our karakia (special message), a mihi (greeting) and a waiata (song). Children develop a range of social skills while enjoying a shared learning time where they have the chance to participate, talk and share their ideas and knowledge.
